Therapeutic BOTOX
What Is Botox?
Botox (botulinum toxin type A) is a purified substance produced by bacteria that is approved by the FDA for medicinal use. This toxin blocks nerve activity around the muscles of the injection site and is used in dentistry to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, jaw tension, and headaches.
How Does Botox Treat Jaw Tension and TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located on both sides of the head where the jawbone and the skull meet, and is used during talking, eating, swallowing, and other everyday activities. The joint and surrounding muscles can become displaced or overworked through excessive teeth grinding and clenching, which can lead to jaw pain as well as headaches. Botox relieves tension and pain by relaxing facial muscles and preventing them from engaging in powerful, excessive contraction and often unconscious movements that produce headaches and pain. Only the areas treated with Botox will be “relaxed.” Treatment is typically a straightforward and non-surgical procedure.
How Long Does Botox Last?
The action of the Botox will wear off and allow the muscles to contract normally again after an average of 3-4 months. In some people, the effects can last 4-6 months and in others only 2 months. Some people need re-applications of Botox to help with pain once the effects wear off, while others only require a single dose.
How much does botox cost?
The cost of Botox can vary and is individualized based on the amount needed for treatment. Your doctor will personalize your dose based on your symptoms and the anatomy of your muscles. In cases with more severe pain, additional doses may be required 2 weeks after the initial dose.
